On February 28, users of a Reddit discussion group uncovered an unauthorized research study involving AI, violating various legal and ethical rules. Researchers from the University of Zurich had been using AI and false identities to manipulate users’ opinions without their consent.

In an article for Science, Prof. Sprumont was reached out for comment. He reminds readers that research involving AI follows the same rules as other types of studies, thereby requiring proper ethical approval and participants’ informed consent.
